A new holiday

For those who have ever witnessed my automatic bug (and I mean, any kind of insect, even an ant can cause me to leap on top of tables) freak-out, you can understand why this day is now going to be celebrated as a holiday in my world. On March 20, 2010, an enormous Alaskan fly began to bug Kyra. It flew lazily (Alaskan flies are extremely lethargic and seemingly doped up) around her head while she tried concentrating on a cut and paste project. With scissors in hand, she leaped up and yelled, "Ahhhh. Bug!" She learned my freakout pretty early on. Then, she said, "Daddy! Daddy! Get the bug!" Again, this is what I normally do.

Only that day, Daddy wasn't home. When this happens, Mommy usually gets a cup and traps the bug so that when Daddy comes home, sometimes there are cups all over the house. But on March 20, Mommy was busy and Kyra decided she had had enough. The fly continued to circle her legs repeatedly and I had some friends over scrapbooking so I didn't pay close attention to what happened next. Suddenly, Kyra ran to the trashcan and threw away a wad of paper towel. Then, skipped over to me and, in a tone that sounded like she was simply stating that today is a sunny day, she said, "Mommy, I kill bug." Yeah right. Her attitude was so nonchalant (so cool as a bean like her Daddy, that I didn't believe her. Until my friend said, "No really, Leslie, she did. I saw her."

Still, I didn't believe that my baby girl, who looks like me and inherited so many of my traits, could possibly have done what I find impossible...the crunch of a body beneath my fingers, no matter how much paper pads the impact, is utterly as disgusting to me as actually being forced to ingest an insect.

On March 21, another Alaskan fly almost as big as the one she "killed" the day before, dared to tangle with Kyra's toes. At first, she leaped up and yelled, "Ahhhh. Bug!" Then, I asked her, "If Mommy gets you a napkin, do you think you can kill it?"

"Yep. Get me a napkin, Mommy."

And so I did and watched with disbelief as she hunted this fly down. Fly number #2 gave her a good chase. It had more spunk than normal Alaskan flies, springing out of her way, even dodging behind the fireplace. When she finally anticipated it's next move and smooshed it between her tiny fingers, she waved her handiwork in my face causing Mommy to run away while leaping for joy that....yes, indeed, I had another bugkiller in the family!

Fly number #3....well, you can see for yourself how that played out.

I interviewed Kyra later that day and here's what she said about the business of killing bugs. "Roar!!! Go away Bug. I'm Kyra. No Bugs allowed in Kyra's house."
